The Mormon Belief System - 1469 Words

The Mormon belief system has many different principles that are unique and set themselves apart from other world religions, one of which being their views on cosmology. The Mormon cosmology belief is the description of the physical and metaphysical universe. Their beliefs on the subject are deeply engrained in the religion’s basic faith; cosmology is related to the church’s views on divinity, extraterrestrial life, pre-mortal existence, and the afterlife. Mormon divinity revolves around the core beliefs in exaltation and eternal progression: the idea that mortals will be given an opportunity to have leading roles in other heavenly kingdoms, themselves. One of the key goals in Mormonism is to achieve exaltation through Jesus’s atonement; as a result they inherit godly attributes. Mormonism holds the belief that people who follow God’s example will become like gods in the afterlife, having â€Å"all power, glory, dominion, and knowledge† (LDS Church 2 27). This belief that people may one day become god-like figures in the afterlife leads to the assumption that Mormons believe in the existence of other worlds like the one that we live in, that exalted people would be able to rule over. The teachings of Mormonism also include that the exalted will live with their earthly families in the next life and â€Å"have spirit children† (LDS Church 11), continuing the growth of their families. A Continuation Of Dry September Essay Example For Students

A Continuation Of Dry September Essay McLendon could not take his eyes from the sky, it was as if they were locked to their position. The world appeared different something inside McLendon had changed. He stood for a while gazing far into the arid landscape when a sudden bang caused McLendon to jump straight from his trance like status, he turned around promptly to investigate the noise. His footsteps hit every creek in the floorboards, realisation flooded to him that creeping about the house would make no difference, he began to circulate the area searching for the something that made the noise. Frantically he stormed about the house but to no avail. The search ended disappointingly with McLendon retiring to his bedroom. The next day the sunshine bled through the curtains and awoke McLendon from his slumber. A huge gust of wind burst through the already unusually open door. The wind was full of sand from the dry and infertile landscape that the whole of the village had risen to. Not noticing his badly beaten wife draped over a chair he headed towards the kitchen to satisfy his hunger when a sudden sharp word sent arrows through his chest, why? McLendons wife broke her silence and shocked her husband to his core. McLendon responded with a blank gaze, his wife had acted totally out of character. McLendons stomach rumbled out loud he laughed yet no smile broke on his beaten wifes face. She responded to his laughter with a cold expression, which quickly turned into anger and rage. She flew her fist towards her husband and prayed he would recognise at least some of the pain he had caused her. This failed to happen with McLendon swatting her fist like a small fly the crunch of his hand on hers did not frighten him, he simply proceeded to beat his wife once again with no mercy. As she lay on the floor McLendon stepped over her indiscreetly converting his pain into an extra kick to his wifes stomach as he walked out of the house and towards his car. As the engine on the car turned over McLendon pressed hard on the acceleration pedal and the car began to stall. The smoke from the exhaust he refused to pay to be fixed surrounded him as he began to cough and find it difficult to breathe. McLendon stepped out of the car to investigate what he suspected to be rain, it never so much as threatened to rain in the Deep South yet quickly a shower turned into something which more resembled a monsoon. Not being deterred by the downpour McLendon climbed back into his car and drove away finding it difficult to see where he was going as the harsh weather conditions impaired his view. The window on McLendons car refused to shut the rain seeped through the gap in the top while the tape he used to try and keep the window together flapped to and fro in the wind caused by the speed at which McLendon was driving infuriated him even more and helped his anger to escalate to levels beyond his control. Goddamn window! and with that McLendon drove his fist through what was remaining of his malfunctioning window. A blast of wind smothered his face and caused his eyes to automatically close with disastrous consequences. McLendons car swivelled about the road and as the weather chose his fate and hurled him and his vehicle high into the air with no mercy. The car crashed to the ground with tremendous impact forcing the passing cars to turn off the road and into nearby trees and other cars. As one passer-by raced towards the burning inferno that was McLendons car the gaseous fumes forced him to retreat and leave McLendon inside the car. Some other surrounding people tried in vain to put out the fire that had engulfed the car as it would a pile of freshly dried wood eventually they bowed to nature and admitted defeat, the onlookers became just that onlookers. .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .postImageUrl , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:hover , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:visited , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:active { border:0!important; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:active , .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1074a9fdae42f73b4ebbef30a420690b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Metamorphosis story EssayThe next day McLendons wife arose with an inexplicable smile on her face, she turned to where her husband should have been and jumped up with a start. John Gotti Essay Example For Students

John Gotti Essay If ever there was an incubator for crime it was the Italian Harlem tenements of the South Bronx. In one of those crowded dirty apartments, a young John Gotti seeked an impoverished existence with his parents and eleven sisters and brothers. His father rarely worked and then, only at menial jobs, risking the money that the family did have on gambling. Eventually the family moved to central Brooklyn, which was known as East New York. In East New York, for a poor boy like John Gotti with nothing in the way of prospects, the Cosa Nostra represented something to which he could realistic aspire to gain the power and respect he craved. He started as many young boys did, running errands for the gangsters, molding himself into a young bully with a future. His first major incident with the police occurred when he tried to steal a cement mixer and it fell on his feet, an injury that affected his gait for the rest of his life. He quit school at sixteen and rose to leadership in a local street gang of thieves called the Fulton-Rockaway Boys, named after two streets in their neighborhood. At an early age he exerted his bad temper, dominance and readiness to engage in fistfights. These were just the right characteristics to develop his potential as a Mafia boss. In the mid-1960s, Gottis boss Carmine Fatico moved his headquarters out to Ozone Park near JFK Airport. Gotti, his brothers, Angelo and Willie Boy became relatively successful hijackers. That is, until they got caught in 1968 and landed in prison. In 1972, when Gotti got out of prison and went back to Ozone Park, the headquarters had been imaginatively renamed the Bergin Hunt and Fish Club. Two important things happened in his life to significantly lift his status in the Cosa Nostra. The first was that his boss Carmine Fatico faced a loansharking indictment, so Gotti became Faticos man on the street to keep him informed about what was happening at a grass-roots level. The second was that Gotti met Neil Dellacroce, an important under boss to Carl Gambino. Neil accomplished Carlos violent dirty work from a headquarters in Little Italys Mulberry Street called the Ravenite Social Club. Neil, who was disappointed that his only son Armond became a drug addict, saw in Gotti a young protege who was a younger version of his own violent, macho self. Like Gotti, he had a weakness for gambling and one such episode got him in trouble with the IRS. Neil ended up in jail for at least a year. With both Fatico and Dellacroce in the slammer, John Gotti was handed a lot of new responsibilities. For one thing, he gained incredible visibility by reporting directly to Carlo Gambino while Fatico was in jail. Before that opportunity, Carlo did not particularly value Gottis crowd in Ozone Park. To the sophisticated Carlo, they were just a bunch of hotheaded thugs. This was a chance for Gotti to show himself in a different light. Gotti brought home to the Ozone Park crowd Carlos prohibition on drug dealing. But the warnings fell on deaf ears. Many of the men very close to Gotti were dealing and using heroin and cocaine. But Gotti kept the faith by warning them: If youre dealin, youre f..kin playin with fire, and if you get caught, youre f..kin dead. Through Neil Dellacroce, Gotti and his Ozone Park boys had a chance to vastly improve their status under Carlo. Carlo had lost a nephew in 1973 to a kidnapper who collected the $100K ransom and then murdered the boy. Gotti was given the opportunity to get revenge for Carlo. The kidnapper was a man named James McBratney.Gotti, Angelo Ruggiero and another one of the Bergin soldiers dressed up as cops and shot McBratney in a pub in front of several witnesses. Angelo was arrested first and later, the police also arrested Gotti for the murder. Fortunately for Gotti, Carlo gave the McBratney case to his talented lawyer Roy Cohn who was able to get the charge reduced to manslaughter. While Gotti was in jail in 1976, Carlo Gambino had a heart attack and was dying. Carlo made a decision that was to create problems for the crime family for almost a decade-he named his brother-in-law Paul Castellano as his successor. Castellano was not respected and admired like Carlo. Perhaps his insecurity caused him to keep Neil as his under boss in charge of all of the more violent activities, such as hijacking. While Paul would focus the family efforts on the more sophisticated criminal activities like union rackets and bid-rigging in c onstruction projects. Wendy Martin EssayIt has been called The Outfit, The Arm, The Clique, The Tradition, The Syndicate, The Honored Society, The Office, and The Combination, but to its members it is La Cosa Nostra (this thing of ours). The face of the Mafia has changed from the faceless, mysterious, and impenetrable power that it was fifty years ago. Fifty years ago, no member of La Cosa Nostra would have considered breaking omerta, the code of silence which, in many ways, is responsible for the power of the Mafia. To do this was to be labeled a rat (called that because a rat will do anything to survive) and be marked for certain death. Today, things are different. It has been blamed on drugs, and it has been blamed on youth. One thing is certain: powerful members of the Mafia have broken omerta, and the entire organization has paid the price. In 1988, Angelo Lonardo, former acting boss of the Cleveland Family, testified before the Senate Committee on Government Affairs. The issue of the changing of t he Mafia was addressed. Senator Roth stated: we are facing a new generation of the LCN La Cosa Nostra They lack respect for tradition and for the family, they have succumbed to the influence of drugs, both as traffickers and as users. As a result, they have become more greedy, selfish, more violent. Many have chosen to forsake omerta, the traditional vow of silence and turn in other family members to save their own skins. Mr.Lombardo himself stated that there were no men of honor anymore. He states: It has changed since I first joined in the 1940s, especially in the last few years with the growth of narcotics. Greed is causing younger members to go into narcotics without the knowledge of the families. These younger members lack the discipline and respect that made This Thing as strong as it once was.

Mechanical Energy Essays - Energy Development, Chemistry

Mechanical Energy Have you ever wondered how a jet aircraft lifts its tremendous weight off the ground, or what gives a runner the stamina to reach the finish line in a race? In order to answer all these questions we must talk about the transformation of one sort of energy into another. The jet aircraft gets its power from jet turbines. These powerful jet engines create a high-pressure stream of very hot gases that push the aircraft forward as they leave the engine. This is an example of heat being transformed into movement. This is sometimes described as Mechanical Energy. However, this transformation could not take place without the fuel that the aircraft gets within its wings or fuselage. Fuel is considered a chemical energy. This diagram shows how the jet engine acts as energy to lift the aircraft off the surface of earth. Fuel can take the form of gases, solids or liquids. When fuels combine with oxygen from the air, they release their stored energy as heat. We recognize this process as burn ing. The individual relies on food for fuel which contains energy-giving substances that our bodies can store until we need this energy to use our muscles. When we do use our muscles within us, we may not always be sure that heat is given off. Our bodies do not burst into flames but the perspiration on our skin is a clue to what is happening. The movement of the windsurfer has a different explanation. The windsurfer is propelled along by a sail which collects mechanical energy from the winds that sweep along the water. This energy has been produced by the sun which warms the earth's surface and sets the air above in motion. The sun's heat comes to the earth as a form of radiant energy. When the heat reaches the surface of the earth, it causes the land or seas to rise in temperature. The sun is very hot. Infact, the center of the sun can reach temperatures of up to 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. This is because of another kind of energy reaction where new substances are continually being created as others are being destroyed. This reaction is known to us as the Nuclear Reaction. Today we are trying to imitate this reaction in improving our energy supply. Scientists have calculated that the sun has enough fuel to go on producing energy at its present rate for about five billion years. On earth man-made nuclear reactions are used to produce a form of power we know as electricity. Electricity can be transformed into other kinds of energy such as heat, light and radio waves. Humans have also used the idea of nuclear reactions as a type of weapon. We call this powerful weapon the Atomic Bomb. Electrical energy can also be used to produce laser beams. This involves energy being concentrated to a specific narrow point where the impact of so much power creates heat able to cut through metals.
